The Ghan Mural (2017) depicts The Ghan train that makes the North-South journey to its sister, the West-East Indian Pacific train; also shown are the Afghan Cameleers |
The Ghan train does not run through Broken Hill, but it is named for the cameleers who were instrumental in the development of the Australian outback from the 1860s-1930s. Camel trains transported goods through the arid land more successfully than horses. Camels brought the supplies to build the railroads, which then supplanted them. The camel drivers came from diverse regions of the Middle East, but the term Afghan, then Ghan was generalized to all cameleers. Broken Hill had a significant population of Afghans, and established the first mosque in New South Wales in 1887.
