After the tour of Peleș Castle, the motor coach dropped us off in the town and mountain resort of Sinaia.
| Ski areas in snow-covered mountains above Sinaia |
We were left to have lunch on our own in town, but we did not choose the Café Caramello |
We thought we were going to Grandma's Kitchen, but it was Restaurant WooD (sic) |
Kent tried a Romanian beer, Ursus, with a relief of a bear on the glass |
Oops, ordered water without remembering I would be paying for a bottle of it |
| Gulaș/Goulash with Mǎmǎligǎ/cornmeal mush |
| Ciorbǎ de Pui/Chicken Soup |
| Scovergi/flatbread |
Casa Slătineanu (late 19C showing the influence of German half-timbered architecture, rebuilt 1912) |
| Primăria/Town Hall (early 20C in Belle Époque style) |
After an hour's drive in the motor coach, we arrived in the city of Brașov, Romania.
| Radisson Blu Aurum Hotel room |
The photo on the wall of the room is a model in a dress that echoes the shape of one of the town's guard towers |
| Striking granite walls in the bathroom |
A short guided walk in Brașov.
Primăria/City Hall (1897-1898, with a blend of Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque styles) |
Palatul Prefecturii/Palace of Justice (1900-1902, in Neo-Baroque style as the Austrian seat of the Royal Court)
Casa George Baritiu/house of a Romanian historian and publicist from Transylvania, and in 1838 the founder of the Gazeta de Transilvania, the first Romanian newspaper |
| Candy store |
| Candies (KSS) |
The corner of this building has a "bumper block" to protect from ox-cart damage; the building is Casa Jekelius (16C), which survived the fire of 1689 and earthquakes |
Casa Bahmüller (1906) and Casa Montaldo that apparently had statues on the roofline (KSS) |
Casa Sfatului/Council House (1420, rebuilt 1770-1778 in Baroque style) |
| Piața Sfatului/Council Square (KSS) |
| "Hollywood" letters on the mountain |
| Casa Annapolis (1909, in Art Nouveau style) |
We were looking for a place that served local craft beer and ran into Paul & Cynthy who were on the same quest with Margaret & Jerry, who happened to run into a fellow who led us to his place of work, Brauhaus Czell |
Czell is considered a revived historic craft beer (2002 to honor a brewing legacy that began in 1893) |
| We tried a Papa Zoli Dumpling, a very sweet fluffy concoction... |
| ...and a Pretzel Gratinated with Cheese |
Returning to the hotel, we saw that "There is no 'we' in fries" |
Next: More Brașov I.
