Hildene III (7/27/2026)

Monday, July 27, 2026 (continued)
A golf cart shuttle was needed to reach the farther reaches of the Hildene Estate, and we did not have time for the Hildene Farm in the valley.
We did visit the Goat Dairy (2008), a solar-powered, sustainable
post-and-beam facility that produces artisan goat cheese and soap
A herd of Capra aegagrus hircus/Nubian Goats
is maintained for milk and some breeding
Milking parlor where six female does can be milked at a time
Processing Room where the milk is cooled
Cheese-making Room where Chevre
(soft fresh cheese) and Tomme
(aged cheese) are produced
These appear to be older kids, whereas the
female does were all at the feeding trough
The youngest kids were separated in a smaller barn
Hildene Welcome Center (1905 as the carriage house)
Entrance to the Cutting and Kitchen Garden
Kitchen Garden with wooden deer-fencing
All the Kitchen Garden produce goes to a
local community food cupboard
Pollinator Garden (KSS)
Apples in the Apple Orchard
Rubus odoratus/Purple-flowered Raspberry blossoms
Vaccinium sp/Blueberries
Cutting Garden provides fresh cut flowers for the house
Kent examines the Observation Beehive
in the Family Youth Education Center (2009)
Upon leaving Hildene, we stopped at the Arlington Dairy Bar
(est 1946, building 1962) for lunch
Next: Magazzino Italian Art.
